About FIRST —

"For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology"
 

FIRST is a world-wide organization with different competitions aimed at introducing students to science and engineering.


There are robotics teams from almost every US State as well as many countries.

 

Goals of FIRST:

To increase interest among elementary, middle, and high school students in science, engineering, and technology
To provide experience building and working in teams
To promote gracious professionalism

To outreach in the community to promote acceptance of science and technology

FIRST Programs:

FRC - FIRST Robotics Competition

Team 422 Competes every year in this competition.

FLL - FIRST Lego League

Elementary and middle school students aged 9-14 create a small robot using LEGO© Mindstorms™.
Maggie L. Walker Governor's School & Team 422 hosts the Richmond Area Competition every year.

FVC - FIRST Vex Challenge

Smaller scale competion made possible through a partnership with RadioShack.
Team 422 is helping to get teams organized in the Richmond area.

FIRST Place

Education program designed to help students explore aspects of science and technology.

 

About the FIRST Robotics Competition:

Teams receive a new game design each year. (2007 Competition*)
Some parts are provided and the rules standardize extra spending.
Six weeks are given to design, build, and test the robot.

 
FIRST Robotics Teams:

One per 30 high schools in US
Anywhere between 1 and 100 students
Several Sponsors
Many technical and administrative mentors
Totals: More than 33,000 Students in 1,300 teams

Regional and Other Competitions

33 Regional Competitions (We attend VCU at Richmond every year)

One International Competition
